The latest figures from the state Department of Labor and Employment Security show nearly four of every 10 Tallahassee, Wakulla and Crawfordville workers were employed some form of government; more than a quarter of workers are in services ranging from doctors to lawyers to restaurant waiters. Traditional blue-collar jobs in construction, manufacturing and transportation combine for barely 10 percent of the work force.
Targeted industries for future growth are associations, information technology, light manufacturing and electronics, magnetic research, insurance, health-related technology and advanced transportation systems.
With a median age of 29, more than half of Leon County's relatively young, affluent, well-educated and skilled residents are in their prime working years. Some 40 percent of them hold a college degree, twice the national average.
